A young boy using his talents to avoid a dead-end life is the moving premise of the popular 2000 film “Billy Elliot.” In 2005, the film was turned into a stage musical. The result, seen here in the national touring production, still retains the inspiring message, although the show’s grand scale and conventional Broadway elements reduce the intimacy and emotional punch of the movie.
