News & Observer food critic Greg Cox says: Fuquay-Varina's best-kept culinary secret features the scratch Southern cooking of owner Joyce Staton, served up à la carte or (your best bet) on a buffet. Fried chicken is the star of the show, with a harmonious backup chorus including chicken and pastry, smothered pork chops, meatloaf, and a wide assortment of old-fashioned Southern vegetables (don't miss the cabbage, candied yams and mac 'n' cheese). Save room for banana pudding, pineapple cake or peach cobbler. Lunch and dinner Tuesday-Sunday (closing Tuesday-Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 5pm).
