Char-Grill is a Raleigh Institution. The Hillsborough Street location is Store #1. It's ideally located near Glenwood's nightlife and N.C. State University. The food is fantastic, real grilled burgers, hot, fantastic fries, and freshly made shakes that put national fast food places to shame.

The granddaddy of Raleigh burger joints still makes them the same way that's been so successful for decades: hand-patted into a roughly square shape big enough to overlap the bun, then flame-grilled to order by a cook in an old-fashioned grill jockey's paper hat. A limited slate of other options - French fries, apple turnovers, hot dogs and the like - round out the menu, but it's the grill-smoky burgers most people come for. Great thick shakes, too. The Strickland location has a dining room, but the other locations are strictly takeout. (Full review)
